For the Sake of Others is a four-part teaching series by New Testament Theologian Dr. Robert Mulholland. Drawn from the 8th retreat of the Transforming Community experience, Dr. Mulholland explores the heart of Christian spiritual formation—the process of being conformed to the image of Christ for the sake of others.

With Dr. Mulholland’s blessing, the Transforming Center captured these teachings during what would become his final in-person retreat before his death in 2015. These videos preserve the wisdom, clarity, and pastoral depth that marked his ministry, offering a meaningful opportunity to learn from one of the most influential voices in spiritual formation.

You can find descriptions each of the teaching sessions below.

For The Sake of Others | Interview with Dr. Mulholland

In this conversation, Ruth Haley Barton sits down with Dr. Mulholland to explore what is spiritual transformation—really? Is it possible to talk about sin without being judgmental? What is the relationship between spiritual formation and mission? With warmth and wisdom, Mulholland shares his own conversion experience, reflecting on a lifetime of teaching, attentiveness, and openness to God’s transforming work.

For The Sake of Others | Session 1

Dr. Mulholland asserts that God is not distant but indwells every person, and that spiritual growth is an awakening to an already-present union with God. He critiques common views of God as judge, grace, or sentimental love, and presents “cruciform love” as God’s true nature: steadfastly entering human brokenness to heal and transform, with radical implications for Christian life and witness in the world.

For The Sake of Others | Session 2

Dr. Mulholland reflects on the essence of who God is as self-giving, “cruciform” love revealed in the cross. God created us for loving union and is always moving towards us. Focussing particularly on Philippians 2, he urges letting go of "self-referenced-ness", awakening to God's in-dwelling presence, and becoming partakers of the divine nature—in God for the world.

For The Sake of Others | Session 3

Dr. Mulholland calls every Christian—not just pastors—to live as God’s presence in their daily life, describing the role of the pastor as equipping the saints (you and me!) for the work of ministry. He contrasts “being in the world for God” (ministry on our agenda, driven by a religious false self) with “being in God for the world,” which is only possible as we find our life and identity hidden with Christ in God.

For The Sake of Others | Session 4

The Church has one single, binary mission—to be in God for the world in our life with others in the body of Christ and in the cultural context in which we live. Spiritual formation in community is often uncomfortable—requiring us to honor diversity, speak the truth in love, bear with one another and forgive one another. Being in God for the world demands patient endurance, enabling us to be a transforming presence.
